“The Foundation helps to equip Afghan farmers with the necessary skills to pull themselves out of poverty”
Afghanistan is an extremely fertile land with a wealth of local knowledge that has not been properly utilised. Over the past 30 years, much of the existing forests have been decimated by the illegal timber industry.
The Foundation aims to bring international and regional expertise to the rural communities of Afghanistan to help explore alternative crops and re-establish forests and greenery using sustainable farming methods.
The Zaher Shah Foundation will reach out to support existing rural programmes to help equip Afghan farmers with the necessary tools and skills to move out of poverty into a more economically secure position. One method is by working with local partners who are involved in micro-credit programmes and income-generation projects.
The Foundation is also working towards the development of a Centre of Agricultural Excellence. This Centre will be established on His Majesty’s Estate. It which will help develop new technologies and teach new theories to help farmers create a sustainable future for themselves and their country.
